Everything You Need to Know About Bideford Devon
A small town and port lying on the River Torridge estuary in northern Devon, Bideford has a population of around 15,000 and was at one time one of Britain’s largest and busiest ports. Famous for its Long Bridge which was originally constructed in the 13th century, Bideford flourished in medieval times due to the wool trade, although its history goes back to Roman times and beyond.

A progressive college with specialist science status, Bideford College teaches some 1,800 pupils from years seven to eleven, plus a 6th form. A £55 million pound improvement project was completed during 2010, and in September of that year they moved into new buildings, as most of the old buildings were demolished. The current principal (2011) is Veronica Matthews.
Bideford Long Bridge: Bideford is perhaps best known for its historic "Long Bridge", which originally dates from the 13th century, and comprises 24 arches, it connects the town proper to the area known as East-the-Water. The original construction was in oak, the stone bridge was begun in the 15th century though numerous alterations were made during the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A scale model of the bridge, showing its development over the years can be found in the Burton Art Gallery in Kingsley Road.

National Trust:
Bideford Bay and Hartland – One of the lesser known National Trust areas, is the stretch of North Devon coastline, located to the west of the town. This picturesque area of craggy cliffs, age old woodlands, and pretty valleys is a delight. Within this region are Brownsham and Hartland, with bays, cliffs and wooded valleys, south Hole and Embury Beacon Iron Age hillfort, Clovelly and Mount Pleasant, ancient fishing village and attractive park, Kipling Tors (a childhood haunt of Rudyard Kipling) and Burrough Farm, pleasant green areas, Peppercombe and Portledge, woody valley and beach. All in all, a wonderful area for wildlife, including many seabird species, rare species of butterfly, and seals.
